The Fruitmarket Gallery are inviting Primary Schools to opt in for art. The gallery, have organised free primary school art workshops to coincide with it’s latest exhibition by American artist Fred Sandback. Sandback began his career during the heyday of American Minimalism and this is the first opportunity to see his work in Scotland. Through their two year education programme for children and young people, Opt in for Art, the gallery are offering a class of P5 – P7 pupils from nine local schools a free visit to the Fred Sandback exhibition and an artist-led workshop. Leading the workshops are Edinburgh based artists, Eilidh McNair and Louise Fraser. Fred Sandback is best known for work that uses coloured yarn to trace imaginary planes in space. In line with Sandback’s work, pupils will be using wool and thread to draw and sculpt familiar shapes. The artists will then visit the school in the afternoon to deliver a classroom-based workshop, offering pupils the opportunity to investigate and explore line and three-dimensional form and create large-scale temporary sculptures. But that is not where the learning ends. Everyone attending the exhibition will be offered the chance to engage with Sandback’s vision. Sandback believed that by playing the old school ground favourite, the cat’s cradle, could be a way to make sense of his work. In his 1989 exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, he created a step-by-step cat’s cradle activity guide that was available in the gallery for the visitors. This will be emulated in The Fruitmarket Gallery show with a education guide and attendants on hand to give out bits of wool and advice. What a great opportunity to get well and truly tied up. * There will be a photo opportunity in The Fruitmarket Gallery at 10.30am, Friday 17 March, when pupils from Bonnington Primary will be practising the cat’s cradle in the gallery space.* Notes to editors Opt in for Art is The Fruitmarket Gallery’s new two-year education programme for children and young people. The project aims to engage more young people aged 7 – 18 years old in the constantly changing exhibition programme offered by the gallery. With a bit of support and assistance, contemporary art offers a wealth of opportunities for learning, exploring and engaging with ideas. The school visits and workshops are available from 24 April to 12 May 2006, for more information contact Johnny Gailey, Opt in for Art Co-ordinator on 0131 226 8186, HYPERLINK "mailto:optinforart@fruitmarket.co.uk" optinforart@fruitmarket.co.uk. Fred Sandback was born in New York in 1943. He studied philosophy at Yale, then transferred to the School of Art and Architecture to complete an MFA. His first solo exhibition was at the Konrad Fischer Gallery in Dusseldorf, Germany in 1968, and his work was included in the influential exhibition ‘Live in Your Head – When Attitudes become Form’, curated by Harald Szeeman at the Kunsthalle Bern in 1969. He participated in ‘Documenta 6’, in 1977, in ‘Pier and Ocean: Construction in the Art of the Seventies’, Hayward Gallery, London, 1980; and had a solo exhibition at the Henry Moore Foundation in Leeds in 1999. Sandback had a long and fruitful relationship with the Dia Art Foundation in New York, making memorable exhibitions with them in 1988 and 1996, and contributing a stunning series of installations to the opening exhibition of Dia’s permanent collection at Dia Beacon in 2003. This exhibition was curated by Christianne Meyer-Stoll at the Kunstmuseum Liectenstein, and is a collaboration between The Fruitmarket Gallery and The Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein. Following its showing in Edinburgh, the exhibition will travel to the Neue Galerie am Joanneum Graz and capcMusee d’art contemporain, Bordeaux.
